Endowments & Long Range Estate Plans


Establishing an Endowment

Give to the Library in Your Long Range Estate Plans Endowment funds help secure the Library’s future by providing support year after year.

Accounts may be established to fund special collections, programs or branch libraries. To establish a new account a minimum of $10,000 is required. These accounts are named to honor the donor and are placed under the PLCMC Commitment to Excellence umbrella endowment account.

If you’d like to discuss the establishment of a ‘named endowment account’ to benefit the Library please call or email either Dick Pahle (704) 416-0617 or Karen Beach (704) 416-0618.

You may also give any amount to an existing PLCMC Endowment Account.


Sample Bequest Language

I, (name), of (city, state, zip), give, devise and bequeath to the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County (written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property) for its unrestricted use and purpose.

Existing PLCMC Endowment Accounts

  • PLCMC Commitment to Excellence Fund - Established in 1989, this fund generates revenue for the general purpose of advancing a pursuit of excellence. Funds may be used for materials collection, programs and/or equipment.


  • The Hoyt Galvin Friends of the Library Fund - Established by former PLCMC executive director Hoyt Galvin. An unrestricted fund that gives authority to current and future directors to use proceeds to best advance the mission of PLCMC.


  • Lois M. Yandle Preservation Endowment Fund - Established in 1999 by one of the Library’s most endearing friends, Mrs. Lois Moore Yandle. This endowment funds efforts by the Library’s local history and genealogy department (The Robinson Spangler Carolina Room) to preserve materials that document community history.


  • Nina Lyon Memorial Fund - Established by David Lyon, husband of much beloved PLCMC staff member Nina Lyon who died in 1996. Funds are used to honor the Library’s Staff Member of the Year.


  • Humanities Endowment Fund - Provides a base of long-term support for high quality humanities activities and programs for adults, young adults and children.


  • Gail McKnight Staff Development Endowment Fund - Established by Gail McKnight, lover of libraries and loyal patron of the Myers Park Branch Library, as a bequest. Funds used for staff training and development.


  • Durant W. Escott Memorial Fund - Fund generates revenue for children’s materials.


  • Lincoln Memorial Fund - For materials collection, Matthews Branch Library.


  • Beri Hunter McLin Memorial Fund - To enhance and enlarge the Carolina Room collection.


  • The Evelyn Cormier Fund - For materials collection.


  • The Robert and Doris Huckabee Fund - For children’s materials
