Awards The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County is a recognized leader among libraries in combining traditional services with new technologies and offering innovative programs and services to meet community needs. In 1995-96, PLCMC was named " National Library of the Year" by Library Journal and Gale Research, the highest award honor given in the library field. In 1996, PLCMC was named "Library of the Future" by the American Library Association and Information Today for its forward-thinking accomplishments and services. Recent Awards & Acknowledgements

    National Award for Museum and Library Service
    The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County joins the famed Shedd Aquarium of Chicago and four other institutions nationally in receiving the 2006 National Award for Museum and Library Service. The award, presented by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is the nation’s highest honor for public service provided by libraries and museums.

    ImaginOn Press Kit wins PR Award
    The press kit created for opening of ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center™ has won an award from the National Library PR Council. The press kit won the "LPeRCy" award in the category of Special Events/Projects. The criteria for selection included originality, visual impact, effectiveness, clarity and content. The winning entry will be displayed at the annual American Library Association conference in New Orleans in June.

    ImaginOn wins Building Design & Construction Award
    ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center™ has won a Bronze Building Team Award from Building Design & Construction magazine.

    PLCMC wins national public relations award
    The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County was one of only six libraries across the country to receive the prestigious John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award for outstanding library public relations. This national honor was presented by the Library Administration and Management Association, a division of the American Library Association (ALA).

    The library’s winning entry was "Bringing the Story to Life," a campaign to celebrate the opening of ImaginOn, which the awards committee described as "a magnificent public relations effort that resulted in attendance and media coverage at their grand opening events exceeding all expectations."

    Of the entries received this year, committee chair Tim Wadham said, "The applications received ... provided a wonderful picture of the amazing, innovative and creative public relations campaigns being carried out in libraries across the country."

    The awards will be presented at the 2006 ALA Annual Conference, June 22-28, in New Orleans.

    Library publications win two NCLA awards
    The North Carolina Library Association has honored PLCMC with two Swap and Chat "Best of Show" Awards.

    - Best in Show, Newsletters, CiO Magazine

    - Honorable Mention, Web Site Promotional Materials, Smart Connections

    Winners were selected based on content, originality, design, format and effectiveness.

    PLCMC has received more than a dozen public relations awards this year. This is the third received this year for CiO, and the fourth received for Smart Connections.
