The Master of Suspense returns to the Library

September 22, 2009 (Charlotte, NC) – Those who didn’t get enough Hitchcock this summer during the Library’s annual Summer Film Series can mark their calendars for another dose of suspense in the fall. By popular demand, the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County will be showing additional classic films by Alfred Hitchcock in the series “The Master of Suspense: 7 Alfred Hitchcock Classics.” Films are free and open to the public, and will show Monday evenings at 7 p.m. in October and November at ImaginOn, located at 300 E. 7th Street on the LYNX light rail line.

Film Series Schedule

Oct. 5: “NOTORIOUS” (1946)
Starring Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains.
The daughter of a convicted Nazi (Bergman) is convinced to infiltrate a “nest” of German expatriates in Rio de Janeiro.

Oct. 19: “SPELLBOUND” (1945)
Starring Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman.
Bergman and Peck play psychiatrists that fall in love. The problem is that Peck needs his own psychiatrist because he’s tormented by nightmares and premonitions.

Oct. 26: “SHADOW OF A DOUBT” (1943)
Starring Joseph Cotton and Teresa Wright.
Hitchcock was fascinated by “doubles”, and this classic – Hitchcock’s personal favorite of all his films – contains the perfect example: the exceptionally close relationship between Uncle Charlie and his niece “Charlie.”

Nov. 2: “PSYCHO” (1960)
Starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Vera Miles.
A young woman embezzles $40,000, and flees the city to join her lover. Along
the way, she stops for the night at the Bates Motel. What occurs there would significantly influence the direction of movie history. Without a doubt, this
is the most famous horror film of all time.

Nov. 9: “STRANGERS ON A TRAIN” (1951)
Starring Farley Granger and Robert Walker.
Robert Walker plays Bruno, a psychopath that shadows and torments Farley Granger’s Guy (a professional tennis player). This is one of Hitch’s gems, a delicious blend of “black comedy” and suspense. The showdown on the “runaway carousel” is mind-blowing.

Nov. 23: “THE 39 STEPS” (1935)
Starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.
One of Hitchcock’s richest achievements from his “early British period,” produced a few years before he embarked for Hollywood. A constantly entertaining tale of an innocent man pursued simultaneously by the police and the actual villains.

Nov. 30: “ROPE” (1948)
Starring James Stewart, Farley Granger, John Dall.
A technical marvel for its era, ROPE was Hitchcock’s bold, radical experiment: shooting a movie in “real time” (or close to it). Two young men concoct an elaborate murder scheme, only to watch it slowly unravel.
