Since 1956, the Foundation Center has been the nation's leading authority on philanthropy. They connect nonprofits and individuals with grant and grantmakers via the most comprehensive database on U.S. foundation and corporate grants available. Use the Foundation Center website to find free basic information about funders based on name, state, and zip code. Search results include organization address, telephone, contact names, assets, total giving, website, and IRS filings (form 990), when available. Website also includes free online tutorials on Foundations and Fundraising, Proposal Writing, and Nonprofit Management.

  • Foundation Directory Online   (Visit Main Library or South County Regional Library to access this resource.)
    The Foundation Center Online is the premier resource for locating in-depth information about grantsmakers and their grants. Includes almost one million grant opportunities from about 90,000 grantmakers. Either keyword text search all fields in this database or limit results geographically, by fields of interest, types of support, donor name, and more. Results may be sorted by total giving or total assets. Records include Profile, Grants, News/Jobs/RFPs, Publications, People and 990s, where available. Updated weekly.
  • Foundation Grants to Individuals Online   (Visit Main Library or South County Regional Library to access this resource).
    Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, is one of the most comprehensive databases of foundations that provide a wide range of funding support for individuals for purposes, including scholarships, student loans, fellowships, program development, internships, professorships, arts and cultural projects, research, awards/grants by nomination only and general welfare. Either keyword text search or limit results by foundation name, geographically, by fields of interest, types of support, or school name. Updated weekly.

Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropist (CECP)

CECP's mission is to lead the business community in raising the level and quality of corporate philanthropy. Their members seek and create opportunities to serve as corporate giving advocates, practitioners, educators, and spokespersons to advance the case for philanthropy and to inspire lasting commitments to community giving. CECP's quarterly publication, The Corporate Philanthropist, features best practices and perspectives on corporate philanthropy. Their m embership list includes more than 145 CEOs and Chairpersons, who account for nearly 40% of reported corporate giving in the United States.

 

Federal Tax Form to Establish a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Organization

Form 1023, "Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code." There are two key requirements for an organization to be exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3). A 501(c)(3) organization must be organized and operated exclusively for one or more exempt purposes. See instructions for details.

Born as part of the President's 2002 Fiscal Year Management Agenda E-grants initiative, Grants.gov provides information on over 900 grant programs and access to approximately $360 billion in annual awards grants offered by the 26 Federal grant-making agencies. Features online application process for grants and email alters for new grant programs.

This popular resource includes Federal programs that provide both financial and nonfinancial benefits to state and local government, private for-profit organizations, nonprofits, individuals and other specialized groups. These programs provide include grants, loans, loan guarantees, services, and more. Includes over 1,000 possible project grants for nonprofits, and a guide for writing grant proposals.

 

North Carolina Center for Nonprofits

Since 1990, t he N.C. Centerfor Nonprofits has been a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as a statewide network for nonprofit boards and staffs, an information center on effective organizational practices, and an advocate for the nonprofit sector as a whole. Its mission is to serve, promote, and represent the nonprofit sector and strengthen nonprofits' effectiveness as they improve North Carolina's quality of life. They provide low-cost programs and referral services directly to all sizes and types of 501(c)(3) nonprofits. In addition, the Center works closely with other local, state and national groups that assist nonprofits. Their website includes an extensive guide for how to start a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
