Adaptive and Assistive Technologies

PLCMC offers a host of new technologies to aid those with visual disabilities and adaptive access needs in using our computer resources. The Virtual Village Communication Center has an area with office productivity and Internet access that highlights these adaptive tools.
  • Braille Station – This terminal includes a refreshable display for reading Braille, a Braille printer and translator software to create Braille from text and back again.

  • Voice Recognition – This software system allows a user to control a computer and dictate without any use of their hands. It requires an initial setup that customizes the software to voice patterns and can be continuously improved as it is used.

  • Eye Gaze – For those with complex physical disabilities the Eye Gaze system allows a user to control a mouse pointer by having the computer track their eyes.

  • Tracker – A combination hardware/software system which allows a user to control cursor positioning by tracking a small reflective dot placed on the forehead or eyeglasses.

  • Cyberlink – Allows hands-free control of the mouse cursor by decoding brain and facial muscle signals. The user wears a headband with sensors that detect electrical signals from the forehead.

  • Jouse – A joystick-operated mouse that is controlled by the user’s mouth. Mouse “clicking” commands are initiated by a “sip and puff” switch.

  • A variety of trackballs, joysticks, foot manipulated pointers and ergonomic mouse substitutes are also available as well as a touch sensitive screen.

  • JAWS – The premier screen reader software makes a text or graphical interface usable by those with visual impairment.

  • ZoomText and MAGic – These are advanced screen magnifiers with many advanced functions including split screen and partial magnification modes.

  • Kurzweil – This is scanning software that uses voice synthesizing software to scan a print document and read it to the user.

  • Many alternative keyboards are available for a variety of needs: small and large imprint, one handed, key guarded, ergonomic, and programmable.

  • Adjustable tables with height adjustable work areas and keyboard trays along with adjustable monitor arms make workstations configurable to a number of positional needs.
