MINUTES
Chair Patty Norman called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m.
Patty Norman asked the Board of Trustees for approval of the January 19, 2006 Library Board of Trustees meeting minutes. On a motion by Bob Bisanar, seconded by Sally Robinson, the Trustees unanimously approved the minutes of the January meeting.
Finance Director Chuck Mallas reviewed the Financial Report and requested the Library Board of Trustees approve Budget Adjustment; #02-03. On a motion by Darrel Williams, seconded by Sally Robinson, the Trustees unanimously approved the budget adjustment.
Facility Update: - ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center – Director Charles Brown reported that there have been over 100,000 visitors to ImaginOn since opening day, October - December 2005. Chief of Operations Rich Rosenthal announced that Building Design and Construction (BDC) magazine awarded ImaginOn the bronze “Building Team Award” to recognize projects where it is evident the owner, contractor and builder worked together as a team to solve problems. This is national award and the announcement will be published in the May 2006 addition of the magazine.
On a motion by Sally Robinson, seconded by Darrel Williams, the Trustees unanimously approved the addition of the Beatties Ford Road renovation project to the agenda.
- Myers Park Renovations – Mr. Rosenthal reported that the architectural selection committee recommends that the Library award the contract to Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, Inc. Architects (HSMM). On a motion by Darrel Williams, seconded by Sally Robinson, the Trustees unanimously approved that the Library award the Myers Park Branch Library contract to HSMM Inc., Architects.
- Beatties Ford Road Renovations - Mr. Rosenthal reported that the architectural selection committee recommends that the Library award the contract to Gantt Huberman Architects. On a motion by Sally Robinson, seconded by Darrel Williams, the Trustees approved that the Library award the Beatties Ford Road contract to Gantt Huberman Architects with Trustee Bob Bisanar voting no,
- Hickory Grove – Director Brown updated the Trustees on this project.
- Galloway Village - Mr. Brown also discussed his meeting with the Mayor of Cornelius Gary Knox.
- Main Library - Director Brown shared information regarding the renovation plans for the Carolina Theatre.
Director Brown highlighted his report and the Security Report.
Mr. Brown also updated the Trustees on the Library Budget Request to the County.
Director Brown presented the updated Facilities Master Plan.
Trustee Greg Curl joined the meeting.
Mr. Brown introduced Director of Public Services Technology Helene Blowers who delivered a PowerPoint presentation of potential Website re-designs based on a consumer study by KPC research.
Programming and Communications Director Rita Rouse announced that the Library’s “Bringing Stories to Life” campaign, to celebrate the opening of ImaginOn, was awarded one of the most prestigious awards presented by the American Library Association: The John Cotton Dana Award, sponsored by H.W. Wilson, which honors outstanding library public relations.
Assistant Director Carol Myers delivered a report on Planning For Results: Roles & Services for the Library.
Director of Youth Services Melanie Huggins updated the Trustees on the Library’s Internet Policy.
Development Director Dick Pahle presented the Library Development Report.
Volunteer Coordinator Chauna Wall reported on the Friends of the Library and the Volunteer Program.
Senior Library Manager Chris Bates reported the Library surpassed its goal for the Arts & Science Council’s Annual Campaign by 10%. The Library raised almost $7,000, with 43% staff participation.
The Board moved into closed session at 5:56 p.m. pursuant to NC General Statute GS 143-318.11(a)(3) to consult with the Library’s Attorney on a legal matter. On a motion by Sally Robinson, and seconded by Bob Bisanar, the Trustees unanimously approved to move into closed session.
After the closed session conducted at the Board’s March 16, 2006 meeting, the Board returned to open session. At that time, the following occurred:
Upon motion made by Laura Foxx, and seconded by Darrel Williams, the Trustees approved of the full satisfaction of Gantt Huberman’s claim for basic services in the amount of $175,000. The motion passed.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
