MINUTES

Chair Patty Norman called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.

Patty Norman asked the Board of Trustees for approval of the January 11th, 2007 Library Board of Trustees meeting minutes. On a motion by Darrel Williams, seconded by Bob Bisanar, the Trustees unanimously approved the minutes of January 2007 meeting.

Sally Robinson joined the meeting via conference telephone.

Director Brown introduced new Youth & Outreach Services Director Tony Tallent.

Chief of Operations Rich Rosenthal delivered a heartfelt thank you to Sam Scott, Maintenance Supervisor, for his over 25 years of service to the Library. Mr. Scott will retire at the end of April.

Director Brown introduced three outstanding students: Gabriel Peña and Sarah Sonera from North Mecklenburg High School and Bella Glauberman from East Mecklenburg High School who served as volunteers in support of the Amigos Tutoring Program. The mission of the program is to provide tutoring aid for Latino elementary school ESL (English as a Second Language) children. These students dedicated at least two hours a week for the past 4 years to this program.

Mr. Brown then introduced Director’s Award recipients Mimi Curlee, Information Specialist at Main Library, Carlton Pritchard, Outreach Department, and Michele Gorman, Teen Services Supervisor at ImaginOn.

Director Brown also announced the Carla DuPuy Scholarship Award recipient Natalie Mikysa, Senior Library Assistant at Main Library.

In addition, Mr. Brown introduced Library staff members named by the Library Journal magazine as “Movers & Shakers” Kelly Czarnecki, Helene Blowers, Michele Gorman and Matt Gullett.

Chuck Mallas, Finance Director, presented the Library’s Financial Report. Mr. Mallas asked the Board of Trustees for a motion to approve Budget Adjustment 01-30B and 01-30C. On a motion by Robin Branstrom, seconded by Darrel Williams, the Trustees unanimously approved the Budget Adjustment. (Copy of the Financial Report attached)

Director Brown discussed the site for the Hickory Branch Library. Chief of Operations Mr. Rosenthal then asked the Board of Trustees for a motion to approve the land acquisition for the Hickory Grove Branch Library project. On a motion by Bob Bisanar, seconded by Darrel Williams, the board unanimously approved the contract to purchase property in the amount of $475,000.00, contingent upon Mecklenburg County providing the funding.

Chief of Operations Rich Rosenthal discussed the Request for Proposal for a consultant to study issues regarding the future of the Main Library as discussed during the November 2006 Board Retreat.

At this point, Sally Robinson excused herself from the meeting.

Director Brown and Chief of Operations Rosenthal updated the Board on the Scaleybark Branch Library project.

Trustee Bob Bisanar requested information from Chief of Operations Rich Rosenthal regarding the South County Regional Library roof.

Mr. Rosenthal reviewed the ImaginOn Parking Report (Copy of the report is attached)

Dick Pahle presented the Novello Report (Copy of the report is attached)

Director Brown updated the Library Board of Trustees on “Project 2010,” and “Imagine 2010” project updates followed from team leaders, Tony Tallent, Howard Milstead, Karen Beach and Julia Lanham.

Assistant Director Carol Myers reported on the 2006-2007 System-wide Strategic Priorities.

Trustee Bob Bisanar reported on the Quarterly ImaginOn Management Committee meeting.

Director Brown announced that this was Assistant Director Carol Myers’ last Library Board meeting and that her last day with the Library, after 33 years of service, would be May 1. Chair Norman and other members of the Library Board commended Ms. Myers for her dedication and service over the years and a round of applause followed.

Friends/Volunteer Coordinator Chauna Wall delivered an update on the Volunteer recognition event scheduled for late May.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
